The oldest confirmed and living tree in the world can be found in the White Mountains of California, USA. The bristle pine tree, named Old Hara, was discovered only in 2013 and is considered the first individual and non-clonal tree studied that is more than 5,000 years old.

Before the discovery of Ancient Hara, the Methuselah tree was officially known as the oldest living tree on planet Earth. It is also located in California's White Mountains, not far from Old Hara. It is also a hardy pine. The tree is named after Methuselah, the biblical figure who is said to be Noah's grandfather and who, according to the Bible, lived 969 years. It is still nearly 4,000 years shorter than the tree version.

Living and growing for more than 3,600 years, Gran Abuelo ("Great-grandfather") is the oldest known tree outside the United States. It is located in the Cordillera Pelada mountain range in the Los Rios region of Chile. The tree is a Fitzroya cypress and is therefore also the oldest living non-pine tree in the world.

The fourth oldest known tree in the world was discovered only in 2019 in the Black River region of North Carolina, USA. The old tree is a bald cypress and is more than 2,600 years old. Currently, the tree has not been given a precise name and is therefore still referred to as BLK227.
